Southern New Hampshire University, the Shapiro Foundation, and TheDream.US have launched a $20 million program to provide full college scholarships for 1,000 DACA participants over the next five years. Don Graham, former publisher of the Washington Post and current owner of Kaplan University, co-founded The Dream.US, the biggest college access scholarship program for Dreamers in the nation.

These undocumented students would use the full scholarships to enrol in SNHU’s College for America competency-based education program and work toward earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. DACA students may find it difficult to pay the $5,000 annual tuition at College for America since they are not eligible for federal student assistance.

The president of Southern New Hampshire University, Paul LeBlanc, said that the university is “quite convinced” that among the ranks of the 1,000 Dreamers and the larger pool of 650,000 DACA recipients are future scientists, community organizers, mayors, doctors, and researchers. We can’t let all that skill go to waste. No sensible nation would reject such an abundance of ability.

Many of SNHU’s students can relate to the DACA beneficiaries who would benefit from the award. LeBlanc added that many of these students are caring for children or elderly relatives and that they are disproportionately students of color who come from low-income backgrounds. Even though their salaries are low, he noted, they may be the primary providers for their families.

However, that’s where SNHU and its local NGO and institution partners come in.

Already, 11 high schoolers have shown interest in the program. By 2019, SNHU hopes to have ten of its place-based partners around the nation have committed to provide the program to a total of one hundred DACA beneficiaries.

According to LeBlanc, SNHU is considering expanding into locations with significant populations of DACA students but limited access to four-year universities.

It’s true that “some in California do a great job with Dreamers,” as LeBlanc put it. They do a bad job in other places like Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona, therefore we’re discreetly looking for new allies. We want to launch in many other areas, including Chicago, very soon.

The goal of the effort is to help 1,000 Dreamers, but the funders and SNHU expect the program to expand beyond that.

“We’re shooting for a thousand right now,” LeBlanc added. “But in 2019, we hope to scale far beyond that by building an evidence base for how to best serve the student population.”

Although tuition at SNHU is already rather affordable, there are several methods to further reduce the amount you would have to pay to attend. Here are some of the ways our students may reduce the cost of their degrees.

1. Digitally Educated

Award given in honor of Elaine I. Routhier Costigan and Ronald J. Costigan: Students in need of financial aid for their ongoing study may apply to this fund.

2. Funding for continuing education and online students who demonstrate financial need.

The estate of Dr. Jeannette A. Ritzenthaler established a scholarship fund in her name to benefit students from the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Undergraduate study at SNHU’s Global Campus is required. The applicant must be a junior (or have earned the equivalent number of credits) at an accredited four-year college or university who demonstrates financial need, academic achievement (3.0 GPA or better), and leadership potential via participation in extracurricular and other extracurricular activities.

This scholarship was established in honor of Martha Van Hyland ’94, a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University’s Global Campus, to provide financial assistance to a resident of Belknap County who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree at SNHU Global. Students must have shown financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

3. Seniors in College

Supporting current students who are veterans, dependents of veterans, or currently serving in the military is the goal of the Veterans Scholarship, which was established by alumni who served in the Vietnam War. The recipients of these awards are determined both financially and academically.

The Alumni Association of Southern New Hampshire University has established the Edward Nassar Veterans Memorial Scholarship in his honour. Veterans and their immediate families will be given priority. A letter of interest should be sent to the Financial Aid Office by all potential candidates. Awards are given to students with demonstrated financial need and academic merit who have maintained a GPA of 2.8 or better.

Students who have served in the United States military services, are in excellent academic standing and are experiencing unexpected financial difficulty may be eligible for the Veterans Relief Scholarship.

4. Students From Around The World

Students of foreign backgrounds may apply for the Charles & Barbara Bickford Foreign Scholarship. Students in need from Vietnam or Cambodia, those from Southeast Asia or China, and finally those from other nations will be given priority.

5. Helder Biesek/Mildred K. Smith Scholarship

John and Catherine-Ann (Smith) Day created the Helder Biesek/Mildred K. Smith Scholarship to honour Catherine-Ann’s mother, Mildred K. Smith, and a former student of Catherine-Ann’s at the Institute for Language Education (ILE) who was killed in a tragic accident before he could graduate. The late Mildred K. Smith had a strong wish for future ILE students to be able to continue their studies at Southern New Hampshire University thanks to the scholarship created in Helder’s honour. Foreign students with exceptional talent and financial need who are enrolled in the University’s English as a Second Language program are eligible for this award.

6. Hassa Jadvani Memorial Scholarship

The Hassa Jadvani Memorial Scholarship provides financial aid to graduate business students. Standard needs and academic criteria will be used to prioritize students enrolled in International Business or Finance programs. If there are no financially needy students majoring in the specified fields in a given year, the funds may be distributed to other students at the Graduate School of Business.

In honour of Li Xu (also known as Oscar), a student at SNHU, a scholarship fund bears his name. Undergraduate and graduate students who embody Li Xu’s selfless character and are dedicated to supporting their fellow students are eligible to apply for this fellowship. Scholarship hopefuls should show that they are dedicated to easing the transition to college life for incoming freshmen by providing them with insight into the University’s academic culture and the social culture of New Hampshire. Students from the United States and other countries may apply for this award.

7. Diane Sciscioli Dugan

Diane Sciscioli Dugan established the scholarship fund that bears her name in December of 2022. Diane was a professor at SNHU for 20 years, and she was instrumental in establishing the English as a Second Language (ESL) program there in 1981. Numerous ESL students attained native-level English proficiency because to Diane’s direction and commitment to the ESL Program; these students went on to excel academically and professionally at SNHU. Students with a valid F-1 or J-1 visa may use this award to help pay for their education in the United States. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply, but only if they can prove financial hardship.

8. Greece’s Groups

This award is made possible by the fundraising efforts of the Kappa Chi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi, a national service organization for women, and the Southern New Hampshire University Alumni Association. Members of the Kappa Chi Sorority are given preference.

Needy and meritorious students at Southern New Hampshire University may apply for the Kappa Delta Phi Scholarship. Members of the Kappa Delta Phi fraternity will be given preference.

Established by the Alumni Board of Directors, the Alumni Leadership Scholarship rewards students who have maintained a 3.0 GPA or above for at least two semesters. Winners will be highly involved students who have shown leadership potential at SNHU.

Students from Franconia, Sugar Hill Easton, Bethlehem, Littleton, or Lisbon, and those from Grafton and Coos Counties are given priority when awarding scholarships from the Dow Scholarship fund, which was created from the Franconia College Endowment.

9. Ed Daniels Track and Field Endowment Fund

Ed Daniels, a long-time SNHU administrator, created the Ed Daniels Track and Field Endowment Fund in December 2021. Ed is dedicated to the Track and field Program because he enjoys teaching and coaching young athletes in the throwing disciplines. Since 2014, when SNHU first began its Track and field program, Ed has served as the assistant coach for the women’s throwing events. This endowment supports the SNHU Track & Field Program in several ways, including the salaries of coaches and mentors who work with the student-athletes.

10. Howard Brodsky Scholarship Fund:

This endowment was created to recognize Howard Brodsky, a lifelong supporter of Southern New Hampshire University. Since the year 2000, Howard has been a dedicated member of the SNHU Board of Trustees. Undergraduates who have been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America will get financial aid from this fund. First-generation college students and new immigrants to the United States will be given extra attention.

This scholarship was created in memory of William S. Green, a founding trustee and former chancellor of Southern New Hampshire University. Juniors and seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA and who have served and reflected well on the University are eligible to receive scholarships from this endowment. Recipients of this award will be chosen in part based on their financial need.

This scholarship, funded by the Richard and Joanne Gustafson Foundation, will be given to a student who has shown both leadership on campus and the ability to put their education to use in the real world. The scholarship will take both financial needs and academic achievement into consideration. A New Hampshire citizen is favoured for this scholarship.

11. Jane’s Trust Scholarship Fund

This fund helps students who want to make their communities better places to live and work by tackling social, environmental, or economic issues by awarding scholarships to those who show a commitment to addressing the economic needs of low-income individuals, families, or communities.

Students at Southern New Hampshire University who demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply for the Kappa Sigma Scholarship.

All students who participate in the Study Abroad program and demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply for the Findlen-LeBlanc Travel Scholarship. Students who qualify for the Federal Pell Grant will be given priority. The funds from this scholarship will be used to offset the price of an international education.

Undergraduate day students who have demonstrated academic dedication by making use of the Wolak Learning Center at the University, and/or a tutor who has made significant contributions to the success of students using the Wolak Learning Center, are eligible to apply for the Fisher Family Scholarship, established by the Fisher family.

Traditional undergraduate day students at the Manchester campus who are experiencing financial difficulties and may otherwise be prevented from continuing their education will be supported via the Herman L. Graffunder Scholarship.

Students at Southern New Hampshire University who demonstrate financial need and academic merit may apply for the Phi Delta Psi Scholarship.

Students with a minimum 3.0 GPA attending classes during the day on the Manchester campus and seeking funding for study abroad or internship opportunities outside of New England will be considered for the Timothy C. Russell Study/Travel Fund. Interns working in the hotel, restaurant, and/or food service sectors will be given priority.

This scholarship was established by the SNHU Student Ambassadors and is awarded annually to students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, have financial need, and have provided exceptional service to the SNHU campus and community.
